This is old news, but wanted to post it anyway so it's on record when Elliot looks at his blog as an adult :)
Sunday May 17, 2009 Elliot awoke from his afternoon nap with a fever of 103F. We gave him tylenol, but the fever didn't break come Monday.
Daddy stayed home with Elliot on Monday. All El wanted to do was cuddle and nap. Monday afternoon we visited the Dr. who said he still had his ear infection (we went to the Dr. the previous Monday for an eye and ear infection and received antibiotics). She gave us some stronger antibiotics and said to call back if his fever didn't subside.
We continued with Tylenol/Motrin, but on Tuesday the fever was still there. Daddy stayed home again. All El wanted to do was cuddle and nap. Tuesday afternoon we visited the Dr. again and his fever had jumped to 104.6F. Dr. suggested we go to Childrens Hospital ER to get a chest xray and rule out pneumonia. At Children's we checked in with a fever of 105.5F. All El wanted to do was cuddle. No chance of putting him down without him screaming, but we had to. Elliot got a chest xray, some tylenol, an IV to draw blood, give him fluids and antibiotics. The chest xray was clear, his blood work was normal, and once he got the fluids in his system the fever broke. The Children's Dr. gave El some antibiotics and advised us to continue with Tylenol/Motrin for the next 48hrs regardless of his temperature, continue with antibiotics from the pediatrician the following morning, and schedule an appointment with the pediatrician for the following afternoon.
Wednesday morning his fever was still gone. Daddy stayed home on Wednesday, too. Elliot's energy level was up a little bit and included some time away from Daddy to play with toys and drink some milk. After an hour or so, Elliot broke out in a rash all over his body. The rash didn't seem to bother him and his fever was still gone. That afternoon we went back to the pediatrician who diagnosed him with Roseola (virus). She stated it is only diagnosable once the rash shows up. She said they have a high fever for a few days and once the fever breaks a rash appears and he was only contagious during his days with the fever.
Thursday and Friday Elliot stayed with Grandma Sears. By Sunday he was back to his normal self including his appetite.
I must say it was the scariest thing having his temp be so high for so long, especially in the wake of the H1N1 Swine Flu Virus. Thank you to our family for spending hours at the ER (and only getting to see Elliot for a few minutes of that time). Your support means everything to us. Today, Elliot is 100%. He still has a little bit of the rash, but his energy levels and appetite are back to normal. We are so thankful that he is ok and we are past this.
